Service Learning

The Agapé Center’s Department of Service Learning seeks to collaborate with community-based partners in local, national and international settings to address community needs, while providing holistic learning opportunities for students.  Through service, participants grow in identity development, gain cultural competence, and develop a lifelong commitment to civic engagement.

Core elements in service learning include:

  • CONTENT: Readings and discussions related to the population and/or community partner, which prepare volunteers for service.
  • AUTHENTIC SERVICE: Service can involve direct or indirect experiences; however, all service must address a significant goal/objective set by the community partner.
  • REFLECTION: Reflection is the element of service learning that transforms simple experiences into deep learning. Reflection encourages volunteers to see the intersectionality of academics, Christian discipleship and vocation to service.

Our Center offers weekly outreach opportunities to local nonprofits, regional service trips over academic breaks, and international service trips each summer.  If you are looking for one-time opportunities, you can jump into our annual Service Day programming!  For more information regarding our programs, please contact agapecenter@messiah.edu.
