Danielle Chun '17 receives AASHE undergraduate research award
The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) announced Danielle Chun '17 one of the winners of the 2017 AASHE Sustainability Awards in the Undergraduate Research category for her outstanding research in sustainability.
The award was announced during the opening ceremony of the AASHE Conference and Expo in San Antonio, Texas on Oct. 15. Finalists’ entries were judged on overall impact, innovation, stakeholder involvement, clarity and other criteria specific to each category.
“The ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ College community is excited for Danielle and honored to have such a passionate student be able to carry out her interests in resolving pressing social and environmental concerns,” says Brandon Hoover, director of sustainability. He adds, “With roughly 12 million food-insecure families in the U.S. and 40 percent of our food being wasted, Danielle’s research is timely. I imagine she will make an impact on other institutions as much as she has been on ours.”
Chun’s paper, “The Drivers Behind Edible Food Recovery Programs at Institutions of Higher Education” is the culmination of her passion and concern for the environmental protection and community well-being. Her research stems from a desire to see the work of food insecurity and food waste coupled to solve the pressing social and environmental challenge that it is. Michael Dolislager, assistant professor of economic development and business, served as Chun's research advisor.
