Championing Literacy!

Items used in the literacy kits compiled on MLK Day.

On the National MLK Day of Service (January 16, 2023), Friends of Murray Library teamed up with the 14th Annual Central PA MLK Day of Service & Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) as well as with students from ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ's Multicultural Student Programs, and Agape Center for Local and Global Engagement to champion literacy by stuffing 100 literacy kits for local children.  Kits contained engaging activities centered around "My Elephant Sized Dream", a book about Dr. King's dream for a beloved community.  Volunteers also helped students make 29 no sew blankets to be donated to Bethesda Mission.

JOY Center, a local early childhood center, participated in a MLK Children’s Reading Event on January 19, 2023 in Murray Library.  We welcomed 40+ kids, staff and parents.  Children visited the Bridge to Freedom Children’s Collection Room, listening to stories and engaging in activities related to the themes of kindness and friendship.  Sarah Fischer and Melinda Burchard, Education faculty, along with Education students, shared their creativity and led the various stations, offering an enriching experience for all.
