Courses and curriculum

The English program provides students with both breadth and depth of learning and to provide maximum flexibility and choice through training that is intellectually, spiritually and professionally focused. The English major is designed around core courses that focus on reading practices, writing and revision, research methods and theory, as well as key questions of faith, history, culture, power, form and craft. You will be involved in vocational and professional development at every stage of the curriculum, including a required internship or practicum and Vocation Seminar. English students also select a concentration in literature, creative writing or professional writing to pursue more specialized skills in areas of their interest.

The modern language programs in Chinese, French, and Spanish provide preparation and practice in speech and writing, with a solid foundation on grammar, vocabulary, and cultural readings. Introductory courses give students a solid linguistic foundation to develop language competence. Intermediate courses focus on language training and cultural knowledge by focusing on political, social, and cultural histories of the people that the language represents. Advanced courses deal intensively with literary texts and cultural discussion. All of the classes are taught in the target language and students are encouraged to use it at all times. Many students pursue an internship in their senior year to further their study beyond the classroom.

Teaching Certification students take a robust set of courses in their content area – Chinese, English or Spanish – as well education courses focused on the history, best practices and pedagogical approaches to teaching. These courses are supplemented with significant experience in local classrooms during the sophomore, junior and senior years, preparing them for day one in their own classes.
