Recreational Reading Collection Development Policy

The library also purchases recreational reading materials consisting of popular contemporary fiction and nonfiction books. While the library’s primary mission centers on supporting the university's academic curricula, we acknowledge the intellectual and cultural enrichment derived from recreational reading. The collection includes bestsellers, award winners, and top picks from literary reviewers, among others. There are many genres for leisure reading and we will collect titles based on a variety of reading interests. Some items may be at variance with our faith and lifestyle commitments but may be included in this collection. Selection and retention criteria include at least one of the following items. An item need not meet all the criteria to be selected:

  • Recent publication date and timeliness of material;
  • Have contemporary significance and/or popular interest to our audience;
  • Materials inclusive of a variety of viewpoints and experiences;
  • Recommendation by a ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ employee or student, indicating public demand, interest, and/or need; and
  • Receiving the attention of critics and reviewers

New titles will be added to this collection regularly. Through recurring evaluations of emerging trends and evolving literary tastes, the collection remains dynamically responsive. This approach ensures that recreational reading materials stimulate intellectual curiosity while affording students a reprieve from the rigor of academic study. The overarching goal is to cultivate an environment conducive to holistic learning, personal growth, and wellness through the power of literature.
